Gan - Fedu View

This picture was taken in early 1960 from the top of an aerial mast overlooking buildings at the southern end of Gan looking towards Fedu.  The two-storey building to the right of the picture with the Palm thatched roof was known locally as the “Maldivian Hotel”.  Officially it was the “Maldivian Administration and Rest Room block”. This building provided a focus for the administrative control of all those Maldivians who worked on Gan for the RAF.  It also provided temporary accommodation for those Maldivians who, because of their duties, could not return to their homes each day.

The large “T” shaped building next to the “Hotel” was the RAF’s Station Sick Quarters, (Hospital).  The other buildings were mainly accommodation blocks for the Airmen and Officers but both the Officers and Senior NCOs Mess’s are in this picture.
